The David Maxwell Award is given in recognition of a new member who has performed outstanding service for the Chicago Gender Society especially in the area of events and activities. The name honors the first President of the newly formed Chicago Gender Society. David served as President from 1988 through 1989. Under his direction the Chicago Gender Society was born. CGS was formed as a result of the breaking up of a predecessor transgender group. David was a remarkable person who embraced the responsibility to guide and direct the fledgling group. He had the vision and fortitude to set the groundwork for the group. He demonstrated the leadership and compassion to bring the needed stability to the organization as it floundered. His work was instrumental in guiding the group to become what it is today. He accomplished this largely on his own, as there were no other men like him, in the group. Sidebar: When the old group split in two, a vote was taken to determine which group should prevail. One of the principals of the group that lost the vote cautioned people, "not to be led down the Primrose Path" by the opposing group. The winning group then chose to name the new group the Chicago Gender Society and named the newsletter “The Primrose”. |
